Five Christmas Enrichment Ideas for Your Bunny

As we are getting ever closer to the big day, we believe it is about time your bunnies have some fun, festive forage activities to celebrate. Whether your bun is on the naughty or nice list (let’s be honest, probably the naughty list), we have assembled our five favourite enrichment activities for them to enjoy and to help you get into the Christmas spirit. All you will need is some scissors, a few spare bits of cardboard, string & paper, and a little bit of patience for the clear up afterwards (hay everywhere as per usual).

These activities are not only a bit of festive fun, but they are also great boredom busters, especially vital in the Christmas period when everybody is busier, there are potentially more visitors at home, and the usual routine goes out of the window. Boredom busting activities will help to keep your bunnies happy, engaged, and calm throughout the festive period. Plus, it is genuinely fun to watch them try and break into their own Christmas cracker.

1. The Christmas Forage Cracker

With a leftover cardboard tube, a brown paper bag or brown paper, and some string, your bunny can have their very own Christmas cracker. Whilst this one unfortunately does not come with a joke or a hat, it is brimming with some tasty hay, forage, and maybe even a treat or two. Our favourite combination includes timothy hay, peppermint, and a couple of carrot slices in the middle, but feel free to use any combination of your bunny’s favourite treats and forage.

1. Cut out a rectangle of brown paper and place the cardboard tube in the centre of the paper and roll.

2. Tie one end tightly with string at the end of the cardboard tube.

3. Stuff the tube with forage, timothy hay, and treats. Tie the other end of the tube with more string.

4. Let the bunnies enjoy this Christmas treat.

Willow Bauble Garland

We decided that our Natural Nibbles Willow Balls and Willow Whirls were the perfect chewable alternative to baubles. Stuffed with hay and forage and hung with string to create a fun garland. That or you could also thread the string through each of them to get individual baubles. We tried a variety of forage combinations for these, with a variety of different sized balls, so you can really do whatever combination you like. Here are ours:

  1. Large Willow Ball + Plantain Leaves + Applewood Chew Sticks.
  2. Small Willow Ball + Burdock Root + Echinacea Leaves & Stems.
  3. Medium Willow Whirl + Dandelion Root + Premium Dandelion Leaves.

Remember, the larger the ball, the easier it is to slot the forage (and the string!) into the holes. It is still possible with our small willow ball, but pick smaller forage.

1. Slot hay into the holes in the willow ball.

2. Now add forage into the holes. Add your chew of choice (e.g. applewood) into the larger holes.

3. Repeat this process with other balls and thread the string through each ball. Hang at a suitable height and watch your bun create some fun mess.

Santa's Forage Stocking

This one was a firm favourite of our taste testers, as it is the perfect combination of delicious snacks, chewable cardboard, and ability to create mess.

Fussy bunny that turns their nose up at hay? This is the ideal solution. The main ingredient of this stocking is timothy hay, with some forage favourites added, encouraging your bun to eat the hay that they *should* love.

1. Cut out a stocking shape into a flat piece of cardboard, with a hole in the top to hang it later.

2. Place a generous amount of timothy hay on the main section of the stocking. Wrap with string so it stays in place.

3. For the top section of the stocking, add a bottom layer of premium dandelion leaves and top with dandelion roots. Wrap with string.

Optional: Slot some premium flower mix into the timothy hay.

4. Thread some string through the hole and hang at a suitable height. Release the buns.

Under the Peppermint Mistletoe

Unfortunately, mistletoe is out of the question for bunnies, due to it being poisonous, so we thought we would come up with an edible alternative. This treat was demolished in about two seconds flat, so we recommend making a few of them. Whilst the bunnies are more interested in eating the forage, there are a few ‘lady and the tramp’ moments which are *sort of* like them kissing beneath the mistletoe. Close enough to be cute anyway.

We chose peppermint for this treat for a festive vibe (think candy canes), but any of their favourite forage picks will do.

1. Create a loop in a piece of string and tie a knot.

2. Tie in a bunch of applewood chew sticks at the top. Below tie a small bundle of timothy hay and peppermint.

3. Hang above a threshold to one of your bunnies' houses and watch them enjoy.

Christmas Tree Goodie Bag

Last, but by no means least, this goodie bag is the perfect festive activity that your bun will love to throw around and rip apart. A little more labour intensive with attempting to cut a Christmas tree shape, it is well worth the effort once you watch them bury their heads inside to forage.

We picked our veggie hay topper - a delicious combination of carrots, parsnips, and beetroot - for this bag because it is giving Christmas dinner. However, be sure not to overload them on the sweet stuff, as no one wants an upset tummy after Christmas.

1. Cut a Christmas tree shape into a paper bag.

2. Fill with timothy hay and forage. Tie each tree section with some string to hold it in place.

3. Place on the floor for the buns to sample.
